“Dear host family,
I am so glad to be able to go to Canada. My name is Helena and I am 16 years old (but I will be 17 when I go to Canada). My birthday is on July 27th.
I am from Sao Paulo-SP, but I have lived in Florianópolis-SC since 1999. Floripa is an island, by the way. I live near Joaquina beach, so I can walk there from my house through the dunes.
I am in the second year of high school and I think I am a very good student. My school is not so big, for example, in my class there are about 36 students.
I think I am a little different because my favorite subjects are chemistry and math.
Here in Brazil I am learning English and also Japanese. I hope I can improve my English and also keep studying Japanese while I’m in Canada. I also tried to play guitar about 5 times, but I just can’t.
Since the beginning of 2010 I decided to be vegetarian and this is only my choice, but I still eat seafood. I think the reason I am still eating seafood is that I am crazy about sushi. But I am not difficult about eating, I eat vegetables, fruits, and if meat is the only thing to eat, I will not complain I will eat it.
I really love to read and my favorite topic is fantasy, like, vampires, immortals, things that could never happen in the real world. My favorite authors are Licia Troisi (Italian), Michelle Paver (African, but raised in America, I think), Alyson Noël, Lauren Kate, Patrick Rothfuss, Becca Fitzpatrick, Richelle Mead, and Conan Doyle. I also really like to read mangas, the Japanese’s comics. And I also like to write, I have a blog (www.bloodbonesandlove.wordpress.com), but all the entries are in Portuguese, perhaps after the exchange I will start writing entries in English.
I love watching series on TV, but here the episodes are on late, so I watch them on the internet. My favorite series are Friends, House (I just LOVE Dr. House), Bones, The Vampire Diaries and Glee. I enjoy watching movies too, especially the ones with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.
Here in Brazil, we have a farm in Mato Grosso do Sul, and I enjoy going there very much, especially because I can ride horses there, and I love this.
My dad and my mom are taking over the administration of the farm that we have, with my aunt, so they have to go to the farm once a month. When they go, my brother and I stay with my grandma, in Florianópolis.
I used to have two dogs, females, but one passed away in 2010. She was a Great Dane and got cancer. The other is my little baby; she is a Brazilian Terrier and has slept inside since my other dog died. So every time I open my bedroom door she enters quickly in my room, before me and climbs into my bed and keeps looking at me, wagging her tail, waiting for me to pet her.
My family is not big, it is just a normal size. My mom (46, lawyer) loves to cook and does it very well. She makes the best rice and beans ever and a lot of others things. My dad (48, geographer) loves kayaking and hiking. When we decided for me to go to Canada, he did not stop telling me that here are great trails and trips to take. And my brother, he is a little bit annoying, but I still love him, we always play the video game Will together.
My family and I have lunch together almost every day, except when I have to have lunch in a restaurant because of school or my extracurricular activities.
My school goes from 7:30 am to 12:20 pm and once a week I have to study in the afternoon because my English class and art class are on Thursday afternoon.
I really love to dance. I used to be part of a group of hip hop dance and we went to many dance festival. But the group is no longer together.
In school Olympics I am the goalkeeper of the soccer and handball time.
On Friday I used to have drama class and I had drama class with to 2 friends from school (Martina and Barbara). Almost every week we went out with other friends and the best part was that the drama class was in Centrinho Da Lagoa, it is a part of town that has restaurants, bars, ice cream shops, shops and other things and because of that everyone could eat what he or she wanted. There you can eat sushi, pizza, pastel, Mexican food and bar food. And in the bars they have music, so you can eat, listen to a good song and talk to your friends.
Almost every week I invite some friends to go to my house and have a lot of fun!
I am so glad to be able to go to Canada, learn another culture and meet new people and I hope that everyone likes me.”
